Brighty's fine tuning in fast-forward thanks to team-mates. Brighty’s mission to find the perfect qualifying set-up for his Trading Post Racing Commodore will go into overdrive at Townsville this weekend, when both team-mates join him in the hunt.
After Bright consistently lapped in the top-five fastest cars during Winton and Darwin’s races, Brad Jones Racing held a summit where it was agreed to throw the team’s full weight behind the new approach.
Qualifying is the car’s main weakness and what Bright and team-mates Jason Richards and Karl Reindler will be concentrating on this Friday during practice at the North Queensland street track.

“In a race you want the car to be very stable and look after its tyres but a qualifying car is pretty much the opposite of that; moderately unstable and tyre life isn’t important so you want to get the most out of them in one lap.
“The trouble is that in qualifying you only get three or four sets of tyres at each race meeting and they only last for a lap each. It takes time to get it right and that’s not very much to experiment with.
“Having three cars trying different things during each qualifying session will definitely shortcut the development a lot. I’m 100% confident that we’ll get on top of it in the coming rounds but that could be any session. We’ve just got to keep chipping away and find what the car needs but I think it will come pretty easy now we can all work in the same direction.”

“I’ve been around racing long enough that I really feel we’ve made some very strong progress over the last few races; it hasn’t shown in the results but I feel that if we continue in this vein it’s only a matter of time.
“We’ve got the ability to pass people in the race and can drive very aggressively, which I believe is a sign that we’re on the cusp of really getting momentum going and I’m really looking forward to the second half of the season.
“From a team owner’s point of view, it’s difficult to put this out in a press release because it could blow up in my face but I’ve been watching Brighty since Phillip Island last year. Back then I said to Kimmi: ‘that guy can’t take a trick but I reckon he’ll be getting results by the end of the season.’ I was right and I’m seeing similar signs now.”
